Jeremy J Hawkes Executive Director Jeremy Hawkes joined our organization in January of 2022. He comes to NARJ with a passion to see restorative justice as a healthy functional process to resolve the harm inflicted within ourselves and others. From a distant past, Jeremy has experienced first hand the punitive response to disobedience from our justice system. The experience was difficult to navigate, faced with unwarranted consequences and immeasurable challenge to recover. With some luck, he was able to find the support and community to take advantage of opportunities that was not easily attainable. Today, Jeremy has over 27 years of sobriety and a life long educated career in the film industry. He brings enthusiasm to discover stories with a positive message. And through restorative practice, he helps define shared values, build character and develop a sense of community for everyone. Board of Directors Jo Stone President/Board Chair Jo Stone, MFT, PhD started working in private practice in 1980 in California and moved her practice to Sedona in 1989. It has always been her goal to help guide individuals, couples and families through challenging life transitions by enriching their communication skills, teaching tools for a positive life view and a general healthy approach to living. This has included running a senior women’s group for four years, counseling families dealing with life threatening illness, working with at-risk teens and their families as well as women in transition. Giving back has always been of great import to Jo. She served on the Board of Make-A-Wish of Northern Arizona for 13 years, Sedona Godmothers for three years, has been a facilitator with Restorative Justice for the last 10 years and joined the board in 2014. Barry Maketansky Vice Chair Actively involved in the non-profit community across the Verde Valley, Barry is a founding member our board of directors since October of 2014. He has been a Lead Facilitator for eight years, embracing the Restorative Justice Model. Barry is currently employed by the Verde Valley Sanctuary and is an advisor to their board. Raised in New Jersey, he did undergraduate work at Michigan State University and has gone on to continue his graduate studies in the areas of non-profit and philanthropy. Much of Barry’s work has included the defense of endangered species against extinction, Special Expedition Cruises in the Amazon and varied ecological studies for National Geographic in Mexico and Central America. Barry’s interests include the environment, animal welfare and theater. Lily Shibambo Secretary Lily Shibambo has been associated with DEI and social advocacy-based companies and projects since 2020. Her goal is to provide individuals with the knowledge, language, and understanding to redesign and advocate for judicial and educational systems that can be beneficial holistically while examining how our systems have forced punitive procedures upon the population. She has created a curriculum for junior high and High School students to provide a common language for students and teachers to use while navigating racial and identity-based topics in the classroom and has created a training manual for NARJ’s restorative circles. Rochelle Bronson Board Member Rochelle Bronson, holds a BA in Education and Psychology and a Masters in Bilingual Education from Northern Arizona University, as well as a Masters in the Art of Educational Leadership (supervision) from Arizona State University. She currently works as the Restorative Practice Coordinator and lead Restorative Practices Trainer for Flagstaff Unified School District (FUSD), and has implemented Restorative Practices since 2004. Her 30-year career is devoted to teaching and learning. Throughout this time, she has worked as a paraprofessional, substitute, and teacher from grades K 12. She was an English Language Learner Specialist and teacher, Instructional Specialist, Instructional Coach, and Administrator for a 6-8 middle school, and the professional Learning coordinator. Leslie Grabel Board Member Leslie Grabel, has a BA in French and Spanish literature, a Master’s in teaching English as a Second Language and Applied Linguistics. She has had extensive and ongoing professional development in Race Theory, Trauma-Informed Care, and Social and Emotional Learning. She is a Restorative Practices Trainer for the Flagstaff Unified School District and for Restorative Solutions. Having been a teacher of English as a Second Language to the immigrant population for the past 20 years, she has seen firsthand the racial and social injustices that her students have endured resulting in the disproportionate discipline that is targeted at this population. By leading trainings in Restorative Practices and by being a member of the RP Implementation Team at FUSD, she is hopeful that there will be a decrease in the school to prison pipeline, and more opportunities for growth, and success. Charles Spence Board Member Charles Spence acquired his PHD at Michigan State University in Psychology and his Post Doc study at Harvard and Claremont Graduate School in Management and Adult Psychology. He spent the past 40 years actively involved in helping boards (dozens) of non-profit, public, and for profit organizations meet their mission in an effective and measurable way. For the majority of those boards, Charles was selected as an officer or chair of the board. A strong commitment to strategic planning, effective marketing and change management has been a part of those board experiences as well as civil rights. He also had extensive experience in training, evaluating and assisting boards to become more effective. Founding member and elected President of Continuous Improvement Quality Network (admitted Datatel to membership). Liza Louden Board Member Daryl Kling Board Member |
